Rant: Web 2.Fail

I suck. At crossposting, but just generally some days, I suck. Going back through the posts and tidying them up so that links work and don't redirect everyone to LJ each chapter, I discover that a long time ago now, I posted chapter four of one fic twice instead of chapters three and four. Meh. I've spent hours fixing URLs. I'll fix that problem later.

Anyway! I accidentally did what I promised myself I wouldn't, and crossposted half of my corrected DW masterlist to LJ. I... really suck. Perhaps I need more tea. Or perhaps I need to behave myself and read FAQs and tutorials instead of bumbling around. I blog like I knit and cook; haphazardly, with little thought and consideration for the end result.

Regarding my taste in fandoms and subject matter, I wonder. I know I have grown as a writer and editor, but have the changes in the kinds of stories that appeal to me reflected growth or simply change? I'm a more informed person, but I can't for the life of me understand why some things lose their appeal for me (and sometimes gain it again).

I'm currently studying Web 2.0 and content accessibilty. My organisational skills and tagging shouldn't be this bad. Argh! Dreamwidth is useable, at least. That's what I really wanted, so that I didn't end up feeling like I was showing up to Yuletide wearing my underpants on my head this year. I can rant at myself over everything else another day.

Update 23

Oh dear. It's one of those things that you don't notice because it's obvious and small, until you do and then you spend months sighing in exasperation at yourself over how obvious it was and how obviously you should have known it all along. When you import to and crosspost from Dreamwidth and LJ, of course your cuts convert because they are a basic code thing, and of course your actual links do not convert because at both sites they are unique identifiers.

Now that I'm done burying my head in uni work and pretending that there was nothing to be ashamed of, I am here to say that I'm making a definite commitment to taking baby steps towards making DW and LJ useable. Since I now have a lot of my fic at the AO3 and ff.net there's redundancy and all kinds of goodness, but that's no reason to not fix things.

I want to use DW as my primary interface and community, so that means that I'm going to go about it this way:

I will slowly fix all the old links sending everyone to LJ from my DW posts. I will then slowly fix all the links to DW from LJ from my recent posts. Once I'm caught up to everything, I will post links that suit my DW setup, and occasionally trip over to LJ to update links to suit. I'll make sure to put notices all over my LJ profile and have a sticky post so that people have been warned. I'll probably edit my crossposting text to include something of the sort too.

In other news, people are already talking about Yuletide nominations, and as I'm giving myself a day off of studying I am now officially allowed to bounce on my heels and tell Yasuhei and all the mugs in the living room about it. I had such a good time last year, I'm worried not that this year will be my statistically possible flop, but that my requests will be a bit too small, or niche, or batshit insane. Reading over the nomination brainstorming is a bit reassuring that everyone's fandoms are as small as or smaller than mine.

Anyway. Links, I'll fix them, in small repetitious bursts between long stretches of apathy. If anyone's tried to navigate either of my fic blogs recently, oh I am so so sorry for all the linkdoom.

Update 22

There we go! It isn't really that productive, to post such short stuff that I finished more or less a year ago, but in my world of research and slow, slow editing of drafts, it's made me feel brighter. I'm feeling a lot better about the fanbook as a whole than I was six months ago, so although the wait has been hell for some people in theslayers comm, I'm really grateful for it. There's nothing like distance to make you hate your own stuff less!

I swear, I have rewritten the beginning to the sequel to Equilibrium so many times it's not funny.  I know the gist of what I'm getting at, but the choice to tell it from Harry's perspective is making it difficult.  I'm Australian, female, introverted and quiet, and my attempts to get into Harry's voice are making me wince.  I am working on it, though!

Someone pointed out an error in Do I-jin already!  Yay!  Apparently my bargain bin childhood copy of Peter Pan had two huge errors.  'Second star to the left' instead of 'Second to the right'.  What the hell?  I did get this book from the same store that sold me a copy of Sense and Sensibility that is upside-down for the middle quarter (so you must invert the book, skip to the right page, and repeat once you come to the end of that section).  Obviously a print worthy of throwing into a shiny big remaindered vat, for transport to a discount store.  I'm not sure if I should be amused or horrified, that I never bought a better copy of Barrie.  (Note: I have all the plays somewhere, but I don't like to put that lovely book on my desk when I'm writing, in case I mess it up.)

The error in Suzumiya Kurumi, regarding the location not actually being Tokyo in canon, is much harder to fix.  I have to fix it in every chapter on multiple sites, and I'm trying to gather energy to do so.  I don't want to roll out fixes at different times, and I'd like to give it another few months so I can scan the whole thing again and pick any minor spelling issues as well.  I feel very guilty for fixing I-jin so soon and putting Kurumi off so long, but I don't want to edit errors into Kurumi.

I know all the hard points of plot for I-jin, but I must be honest, I have not written the final chapters yet.  I want there to be flow, and space to edit and change things.  There's a lot of characterisation I need to fit in, and trying to do justice to the large expanded cast of the series is tough.  I'm feeling a bit guilty, because I think I'm having way more fun writing than people will have reading.  Ah well.

Two shorty mcshort shorts that I drafted for the Slayers Fanbook which came out recently. Pink ended up in the fanbook, but Sweet Spot was my favourite, so I'm posting them both today.

Title: Pink
Rating: PG
Length: 492
Warning: Maybe slight spoilers for Slayers S1
Summary: Lina Inverse gets an unwelcome invitation.

Title: Sweet Spot
Rating: PG
Length: 549
Warning: Maybe slight spoilers for Slayers S1
Summary: Lina used to think there was a sweet spot. A time and place in one's life as a sorceress when she'd be experienced enough to know the right spells, rich enough to have the best armour and equipment, but when she was still young enough to get away with being a mercenary for good pay.

Update 21

The day has come, for me to pull my thumb out and organise dreamwidth crossposting.  I haven't written much, because life has very much been full of life and busy-ness, but I'm excited nonetheless.  Still waiting for the Slayers fanbook to release my tiny shorts, waiting on betas for some longer one-shots, and pushing out Do I-jin Dream of Electric Books because I've sat on the opening chapters for a year, and I'm finally getting back into the swing of drafting the later ones.  I call it the fire-up-my-bum writing incentive.

I want to write the sequel to Equilibrium, oh dear lord I do.  But Hellsing Ultimate VIII has come out and eaten my brain.  I skip past the CG hordes of undead and just ogle the scenes where Alucard kneels before Integral and when Anderson pulls out his special little box.  It's a good thing it took this long for VIII to come out, because I honestly fall head over heels for Integral every time I encounter Hellsing.  If there weren't gaps between releases, I'd spend my life swooning.

As it is, I've derailed to dabble in Hellsing fic that will possibly never see the light of day.  I have drop-kicked my laptop (don't ask, it's an embarrassing story), so the draft for the sequel to Equilibrium has died.  It's in my head, and as soon as I stop wincing every time I think about my poor brutally killed machine, I'll type it out all fresh and shiny.

I considered ranting about Fair Use in various copyright laws, but in the end it all boils down to 'It needs to be determined on a case by case basis, so fanfiction as a whole is basically Schrodinger's Copyright Violation, neither legal nor illegal until you open the box.'  This reminds me, more than anything, about how very very much I hate the catboy in Hellsing.  What the fuck was Hirano thinking?  It does not make sense.
